Living in Israel - When You Know You've Stayed Too Long, Part 1

Israel is a great place to stay. I would also say it can be a great place to live and work and play. However, just sometimes life here can amaze and astound you. It's when you start taking these amazing moments for granted that you know you're in trouble...

You know you've stayed too long in Israel when...

  1. ...you're in a lift and don't even notice the guy yelling into his cell phone.
  2. ...someone says 'snack', you think: watermelon.
  3. ...you can't tell the difference between a Goldstar and a Tuborg.
  4. ...you put your luminous safety jacket (required by law to be in-car) over your car seat.
  5. ...you start supporting Brazil during a World Cup.
  6. ...you eat sabras (prickly pear), seeds n'all.
  7. ...you don't blink when handed an alcohol free cider drink.
  8. ...you start advising your host how to cook his/her barbeque meat.
  9. ...you have an amusing army anecdote and weren't even in the army.
  10. ...you think nothing about queueing to get into a coffee bar.
  11. ...you call a chocolate cake a "kushi" (black/negro) cake.
  12. ...you queue for yeasty products once Pessach breaks.
  13. ...you shout up from the street at a friend living on the fifth floor.
  14. ...you start to enjoy shoddy service and make repeat visits to a place where you are repeatedly shafted.
  15. ...your second sentence is "How much did it cost?"
  16. ...you wear flip flops to weddings.
  17. ...you even start wearing Crocs.
  18. ...you buy a Sarit Hadad disk.
  19. ...you actually play the Sarit Hadad disk a few times.
  20. ...matkot (beach tennis) is your main form of exercise.
  21. ...you talk wayyyy louder than is necessary.
  22. ...you no longer wait in line, but go immediately to the head of the queue "just to ask a question".
  23. ...all tourists look the same to you.
  24. ...open spaces make you nervous.
  25. ...you hear Wham's 'Last Christmas' in August and don't even flinch.
  26. ...you find state-employees helpful, knowledgeable and friendly.
  27. ...all your mother-in-law's friends have been plasticly enhanced.
  28. ...you think nothing of eating in the street, humus dribbling down your chin.
  29. ...you can't put a proper sentence together in your native language.
  30. ...you pay those pesky kids to clean your windows at every junction.
  31. ...you aren't aware that one is supposed to pay for software.
  32. ...a PhD in Nuclear Physics fluent in 4 languages cleans your house for a pittance but she is from the Ukraine so it's all right.
  33. ...you use the word "Nu" at least 10 times when listening to a friend's story.
  34. ...you no longer ask yourself why there are so many jeeps in this country.
  35. ...you find that it saves time to stand and retrieve your hand luggage while the plane is on final approach.
  36. ...you start clapping when the plane lands.
  37. ...you regard traffic signals, stop signs, and indicator levers with equal disdain.
  38. ...car accidents become a source of heartwarming humour.
  39. ...you forget that the other person needs to finish speaking before you can start.
  40. ...you arrive 30 minutes late for a meeting but still manage to beat the other meeting attendees.
  41. ...you ask how much people are making and expect people to answer.
  42. ...you are the last of your original group of friends still in Israel.
  43. ...your idea of a larger home is an extra 10 square meters.
  44. ...you can swear fluently in Arabic.
  45. ...you buy a thick winter coat on October 1st.
  46. ...you wear your new winter coat on October 2nd.
  47. ...your family stops asking when you'll be coming back.
  48. ...you buy a water cooler.
  49. ...you leave the plastic wrapping on your new car's seats.
  50. ...knives and forks feel, well, strange.
  51. ...you get homesick for a pita stuffed with felafel and tehina when away from Israel.
  52. ...you no longer laugh at the angles of metal scaffolding.
  53. ...you wear body hugging t-shirts to show off your love handles.
  54. ...you know enough Hebrew to make Israelis laugh their socks off.
  55. ...you've killed at least 100 cockroaches with your favourite 'killing' shoe.
  56. ...you look at the local women/men and start fantasising about Scandinavian women/men.
  57. ...you've seen Midnight Express, Hair and The Princess Bride at least 5 times each.
  58. ...you know the words to Hotel California.
  59. ...you shorten supermarket to 'super'.
  60. ...you consult your English dictionary far more than your Hebrew dictionary.
  61. ...everything seems normal.

Jubilee Wedding Themes

If you're looking for a unique theme for your wedding then why not opt to celebrate with style centered around the Queen's Diamond Jubilee? There are many ideas and ways to incorporate this special event, whether you want a subtle touch to your wedding day or a full on British party, complete with a union jack wedding dress here are a few ideas to get you thinking.

  • White, Red and Blue are not your usual wedding day colours but look so striking together. Go shopping for white wedding dresses or why not opt for a striking red wedding gown often reserved for winter or valentines weddings. Alternatively why not look for a dress which has beading, embroidery or a sash belt or bow in a red or blue colour.

  • If you have several bridesmaids you could dress them in alternative gowns of white, blue and red

  • The men in your party could wear a Union Jack tie, bow tie, or if they want to really stand out how about a cool waistcoat. For a more subtle look then simply select a colour for each of the men for a complimenting cravat and handkerchief.

  • Dress your venue out as if it's a street party complete with bunting, flags, long tables and chairs covered in jubilee shades. Use Union Jack paper plates and cups or vintage crockery. You could have a typical English tea party or a hog roast for your evening reception. Name your tables after royalty, palaces and castles or things relevant to the Queen. Shower the tables with diamond style confetti.

  • Your wedding cake could be a creation of jubilee coloured cupcakes or have you and your groom recreated as a royal cake topper.

  • Have your wedding invitations featuring diamond sequins or create your own 'Royal Crest' logo.

  • Opt for a classic wedding car in white with red leather seats decorated with huge blue bows.

  • How about a white chocolate fountain complete with a mountain of white marshmallows and red and blue dipping fruits or have a sweet station/buffet for your guests to help themselves to their old childhood favourites complete with paper bags.

  • Have songs played that were important throughout the Queens Reign such as her other jubilees and her own wedding day.

  • Your bouquet could incorporate the jubilee colours or why not go for flowers that have a royal name such as Busy Lizzies or Sweet Williams.

  • Accessorise your chosen wedding dress with jewellery, head wear or shoes in a blue or red.

Winter Wedding Brainstorm

So you want a crisp, brilliant, sparkling winter wedding. Sounds romantic, festive, fun... but how do you turn that idea into a reality? You really can have a winter wonderland wedding reality; it just takes a little imagination and a bit of the holiday spirit.

What to wear...

Consider a long sleeve if you'll spend any time outdoors or pair your short-sleeve, or sleeveless gown with a white fur (or faux fur) wrap or shrug. Top off your winter sparkle with a little "ice" ... diamond jewelry should complete your look. Go with an "easy-to-bustle" dress to keep your hem free of winter slush if you'll be spending any time outdoors. White is certainly crisp and beautiful, but for a more daring, vibrant look, try holiday and winter colors; reds, blues and greens can really make a stunning splash!

What to serve...

A winter feast of course! Think warm, winter comfort foods. Replace that salad course with a creamy pumpkin or squash soup or, if you simply must serve salad, top with toasted almonds or pecans and serve with a cinnamon sprinkled, cabernet poached pear and serve with warm bread and butter. Main course ideas... try a roasted chicken breast served with warm bread pudding, a grilled veal chop with winter squash and cranberry risotto, or a petit filet with giant shrimp and cilantro-lime sauce. Offer your guests warm cider, hot chocolate, or even eggnog to cap off your warm, festive occasion.

How to decorate...

Festive...festive...festive! Take advantage of the mood and joy of the holiday season and incorporate this into your occasion with the sparkling whites, silvers, reds and greens of the holiday season. String white light strands; snow spray windows and mirrors; top your cake table with a softly rumpled white cloth and sprinkle with glittery snow confetti; use pine branches, holly berries and white pillar candles for gorgeous table centerpieces; and place decorative cinnamon or pine scented candles on your gift, place card, and guestbook tables. For those extra special touches, consider an ice sculpture, creamy mint chocolate fountain, or glass or crystal snowflake ornaments to adorn each guests place setting. Who needs a glass shoe filled with dinner mints anyway!

In hosting a winter wedding, you can really take advantage of the good-natured, joyful atmosphere of the season. It takes only a little vision, a little imagination, and a lot of love. Cheers!

Wedding Dress Underskirts And Hoops

Purchasing your wedding dress is a very exciting time, but all the focus is on the dress, while many of the accessories are forgotten about. Shoes are usually remembered, and veils or other headwear, but in all the flurry of excitement you may not have given much consideration about whether or not you will need to wear a hoop or underskirt underneath your chosen gown. When you were trying on all the different dresses, you may not have given much thought to how different they can look with the right structural assistance hidden underneath, but adding a hooped underskirt to your outfit can change your wedding gown from flowing and sophisticated, to a princess style ballgown. If your dress is a few inches too long, an added benefit of the hoops is that the skirt is lifted a little higher and further away from the floor. Add in a pair of the perfectly sized heels and you may not need any alterations at all!

There are many types of hoops, petticoats and underskirts that you can purchase, usually from your bridal wear shop, while some bridal boutiques offer you the option to hire them. These are separate items worn underneath your wedding dress to help create a certain shape. Many wedding dresses have numerous layers of tulle, chiffon and other fabrics built into the skirt of the dress already, however, if you are looking to make your skirt fuller and wider, opting to wear an additional hoop or petticoat is an easy way to achieve this look.

Hoops come in various sizes. A simple rule is that the more boning they have in them, then the more dramatic and voluminous the skirt's silhouette becomes. Hoops are perfect if you envisage a large princess or ball gown style gown, while some wedding gowns just look better with an underskirt. Upon choosing your wedding dress have a chat with your bridal sales assistant, with their knowledge and expertise they will be able to guide you and explain all the types available and which would be most suitable for your type of wedding dress.

Underskirts can also help fix certain problems. If your gown is a light floaty fabric you might find that your underwear is visible, especially in certain lighting conditions. An underskirt will help solve this problem. If your wedding gown has pleats in places it shouldn't, you are finding that it is creasing in at the centre of the skirt, or the hem is folding or curling instead of sitting flat and smooth, then choosing to wear an underskirt can help the dress hang as it should and make it look like it does in the designer's photographs. Hoops and underskirts hold the wedding skirt away from the bride's legs. Many brides find walking in their gown much easier and they are less likely to trip over the skirt. They also prevent you getting hot and itchy as some brides find they can be sensitive to the netting underneath their wedding dress. Some slim fitting wedding dresses will not need an underskirt and would look better with a seam-free body stocking or similar type of underwear.

If you choose to wear an underskirt, hoop or petticoat it can have a dramatic impact on the overall length of your wedding dress. It is imperative, therefore, that you have it with you when you attend your bridal fittings so that the seamstress working on your gown can adjust the hemline as necessary. You may find that with your hoop and your shoes, your wedding dress might just be the perfect length for you!

Top 10 Reasons to Stay (and Play!) in the Poconos

10. Haven of History - History buffs will have a ball hopping from museum to museum throughout the northeast Pennsylvania area. You can start at the Packer mansions in Jim Thorpe, at the southernmost end of the Poconos, and not stop until you've experienced life on a 19th century Pennsylvania German farmstead at Quiet Valley Historical Farm, the coal region's lifeblood at the No. 9 Mine, or discovered the area's first residents at The Pocono Indian Museum. The Monroe County Historical Society houses all the local history you can handle, along with a genealogy research library. Whatever the era, the Poconos have lived to tell its story. It's yours to discover!

9. Avenues of Art - The architecture alone in the entire area is eye catching to creative souls and appreciative onlookers alike. The Poconos have long since been a haven for and an inspiration to artists of all mediums. Stroll up Jim Thorpe's historic Broadway and pop in at The Gandy Dancer to view art and photography drawn from the local scenery and history, or Anita Shapolsky Art Foundation to take in Abstract Expressionism, films, and poetry. There are many open gallery doors in between. Stroudsburg is home to Susan Bernadette Lebel. Susan is not only a professional florist that creates fairytale wedding arrangements for The Stroudsmoor Country Inn's blushing brides, she is also a gifted painter. Her nature-inspired art decorates the Auradell Gallery at the Inn, as well as many other places throughout the Poconos and Lehigh Valley.

8. Music is Everywhere - Not a day goes by without music in the Poconos. If theaters are your thing, tickets are always on sale for great acts at the Sherman Theater and Mauch Chunk Opera House. An eclectic array of musicians are always stopping by the area, from classic rock and oldies, to folk, jazz, blues, Celtic music, and hits of today. If a more relaxed atmosphere, or dancing, is what you are looking for, most taverns and restaurants in the area have weekend musicians on tap regularly. There's no shortage of live entertainment any night of the week.

7. Adventures for the Brave - Afraid of heights? Don't like getting wet? Close your eyes and keep walking. Are you young, young at heart, or in charge of keeping some youngsters busy for the weekend? Then you'll be in the right place here. Camelback has more adventure than you can imagine with their ziplines and water slides. Camelback isn't just for skiers anymore! If you are adventurous (but not that adventurous) you may choose to go horseback riding at the Inn at Pocono Manor's stables or scream around the track at a local go kart track. Jim Thorpe is home to some of the best whitewater rafting on the Lehigh. Take a kayak lesson at Northeast PA Kayak School, grab a paintball gun, or rent a boat from the Pocono Boat House. Are you the type of person to seek out the Poison Dart frogs at Bear Mountain Butterfly Sanctuary, or the one to sit in the Flutterarium allowing several species of butterflies to noiselessly land in the palm of your hand? The Pocono area is waiting to take your breath away.

6. Time for Tee - If you haven't experienced the beauty and serenity of the prime greens at the Inn at Pocono Manor or the sprawling fairways at Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort, then you haven't really golfed. The picturesque Mahoning Valley Country Club is now open to the public. A bad day on the golf course isn't really such a bad day, is it? The Poconos are home to some of the most manicured and breathtaking courses in Pennsylvania...and they are waiting for you.

5. Let the Festivities Begin - All of this relaxing and beauty is enough to make someone want to celebrate. Luckily, the Poconos are always celebrating. The town of Jim Thorpe celebrates its namesake's birthday every May, along with Earth Day, Fall Foliage, St. Patrick's Day and an Olde Time Christmas. Halloween brings ghost walks and haunted mines, and horrifyingly haunted woods and mansions. Stroudsburg has notable parades, art festivals, car shows, and carnivals. Keep an eye on local newspapers and websites for full schedules. Most festivals are held in downtown common areas, resorts, and ski hills where they are hard to miss. The Poconos celebrate everything from the Blues, to wine, to garlic, to being Irish for a day!

4. Shop Til You Drop - Nothing compares to finding the perfect item in a unique shop in a quaint town. Stopping in at Josephine's Fleur-de-lis on Main Street in Stroudsburg, you'll find the most meaningful jewelry or home décor item to remember your visit. Dunkelberger's offers women a chance to find the perfect ensemble to wear for a weekend outing while its adjoining outfitter shop will keep any significant other distracted by outdoor gear just long enough. Josephine's, Dunkelberger's, and many other boutiques offer specialty items you can't find just anywhere. The shopping district on Stroudsburg's bustling main street often offer shoppers special deals, unique treats, and rare deals just to thank you for shopping local. Make sure you wear comfortable shoes. Once you start, you won't want to stop.

3. Nature Calls - People move to the Poconos to get away. Tourists visit the Poconos to get away. You need a getaway! There is a state park or environmental center everywhere you turn. Mountains loom on one side of you, a lake, river, or stream flows on the other, no matter where you go. You can't help but breathe deeper, smile broader, and relax. Hike to the highest lookout or pull up a picnic bench and your favorite book. If you're lucky, you'll spot a deer, fox, raccoon, bird, or even a bear. What could be better? You can visit the Pocono Mountains Visitors Bureau or Department of Conservation and Natural Resources to find a place to hike or camp. If enjoying nature on a more permanent basis is what you are looking for, you can call Commonwealth Real Estate Your Way or Pocono Mountain Lakes Realty to point you in the right direction.

2. Most Comfortable Places to Hang - Your Hat All of that shopping and adventure will make you want to stay just one more day. There is no lack of hospitality when you need a place to stay for the night. Most resorts and hotels in the Poconos offer their guests so much, visitors don't even need to leave the property. Stroudsmoor Country Inn is a popular wedding destination with a very romantic atmosphere offering special dinners and packages, while the Inn at Pocono Manor and the Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort offer many activities and amenities to keep you busy and boast sprawling grounds and beautiful architecture. Bed & Breakfasts adorn the Jim Thorpe area. Take a step in to a different era at the Inn at Jim Thorpe, or hop across the pond and feel like English royalty at Hillcrest. If you can handle a rustic accommodation, Jim Thorpe Camping and many state parks offer space to park your RV or pop up your tent. The Poconos just beg you to stay...

There's just one thing left to do before you leave the Poconos...

1. Eat, Drink, & Be Merry! - I have yet to have a meal at a Pocono restaurant I did not enjoy. This area is rich in vineyards, bistros, taverns, pubs, fine restaurants, diners, and hole-in-the-wall local secrets. If you'll be stopping in town, there are two things you do not want to miss; dinner at Andrew Moore's Stone Bar Inn and a martini at Liquid. Each offers such a sophisticated and unique atmosphere with truly fantastic menus. Put them on your list, but also give the local specialties a try. Crave at 66 Broadway in Jim Thorpe offers the area a rare option: an authentic Absinthe bar. Give it a whirl and stay to munch, or wander down the street for an eclectic array of options from Irish, to Tex Mex, to local organic. Chances are, you'll leave full and happy. (If you do actually decide to leave...)

The Pocono Mountains have so much to do and see all year round. Here is a round up of the best of the best of what to do and see in the Poconos. Visit http://www.PoconoMap.com for what to do and see in the Pocono Mountains
