Something You Can Sway In

Men, picking out what you're going to wear on your wedding day is rarely your job. Usually your bride has an image of how you should look and then she marches you and your groomsmen to a tux shop. Voila, you are suddenly decked out in an outfit that fits with her dress and the theme of the wedding. But if you are a guy in charge of choosing what to wear for this big moment in your life, make sure you put some thought into it.

Location, Location, Location
It is always best to pick out your nuptial attire after you decide where and when it will occur. The next step is to discuss how formal the affair will be with your bride-to-be. Can you wear a suit with a tie, or is it a swanky ballroom setting where a tux will look best? Talk about these issues together and decide what would fit the theme.

It's All About the Dress
Do not forget to match her dress. This is so important! The first half of the wedding, everyone's eyes will be glued on your bride: know that you will not take center stage until picture time (and even then it's a crapshoot). But even so, those pictures and the entire wedding need to convey unity in the relationship. So what better way than to match up with your beautiful bride!

It might seem a little girly, but browse through some bridal magazines or online tux/suit pictures to check out what's available for formal wear. Plus, you can impress your dear fiancée with some cool formal garb terms to let her know you've been doing your homework. Be specific about what you want by making lists of what you liked and didn't like in the magazines. Ascot? Waist coat? Cummerbund? Kilt?

Team Up
If you need assistance, you and your bride can shop together for your attire. She can give you advice and you can show what clothing makes you look good and feel more at ease. Talk to your bride if you are feeling uncomfortable with her choice for your attire. If you look like a duck, and do not want to look like a duck, work with her to choose another outfit.

You can also get the whole wedding party together and head out to a place to choose similar attire. A lot of places offer group discounts for rental: if you rent all your groomsmen suits/tuxes the grooms rental is free.

Determine the Details
Discuss details of the suit or tux. Will you need a cummerbund? What kind of tie will look best with your outfit? Do you need cuff links? Think about important things that not every groom is familiar with (and check back for future blog posts on the subject!).

Do not forget shoes. Again check with your bride and the wedding theme (formal vs. informal) in order to choose what's right for your feet. On this day, be kind to your bride. If she has her heart set on you wearing polished black dress shoes and you want sneak in with your brown cowboy boots, you know you're asking for trouble. It's your wedding and you need to look presentable. Let your FW show off her gorgeous man!
